The North should lead in green initiatives, ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and attractive environment. □ Environmental Responsibility: Sustainability is not just an option it's imperative. The North could build on these industries, creating jobs and fostering local talent. Green energy, healthcare, and tech sectors are ripe for growth. □ Economic Diversification: The future lies in diversifying the economy. By nurturing innovation, we can build economic resilience. Tech clusters, research centres, and innovation hubs could become the next Silicon Valleys. □ Innovation and Technology: The North has immense innovation potential. They will need to promote job creation, education, and innovation in this new reality. □ Rethinking Strategies: Without HS2 and uncertainty surrounding NPR, Local transport, sustainable housing, and investment in diverse industries will need to be reassessed. □ 2 Million Homes: The North needs a 30% increase in residential floor space, equivalent to over 2 million well-connected homes. □ 20% Employment Growth: To halt the relative decline of connectivity beyond 2051, it's projected that we'll need a 20% increase in employment density in the North, concentrating growth where connectivity is strongest. With that ambition in mind, cities like Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool would flourish as economic powerhouses. Full implementation of HS2 and NPR would have spurred urban development and attracted businesses. □️ Urban Development: Thriving cities are essential for regional growth. ![]() HS2 and NPR would have helped to bridge the North-South divide, enhancing accessibility to economic hubs and job markets. Effective transportation infrastructure connects people, businesses, and opportunities. □ Connectivity Matters: The heart of levelling up is improving connectivity. HS2 and NPR were poised to be transformative catalysts for this mission, however, recent developments have resulted in reassessing what levelling up looks like and can it still be achieved. The North of England has long been a focus for economic revitalisation, with initiatives like levelling up at the forefront of the agenda.
